Our Grade 6 Music Discoveries
Our grade 6 students enjoy the opportunity to learn a band instrument after completing the recorder program in the elementary level. Students are fully introduced to each instrument and then choose the instrument they will play for their time in Middle School. Once students are extablished in their chosen instrument they may be curious about trying another instrument (at any grade level). While they continue with their orignal instrument in music class some students have been known to play another instrument in parallel in the RMS Band or simply work away on it at home (students are invited to borrow instruments over night and on weekends to increase their playing ability). Making a musical sound, learning to play 3 to 5 notes and learning several songs are the major goals for grade 6 learners.
The second half of the semester involves the students in a comprehensive study of the instruments of the orchestra, The Baroque Period and two of its composers, Bach and Handel, and a fun exploration of rhythm. If time permits the students enjoy a leeson or two in bucket drumming.
