12 Week Music Block: It is indeed a privilege to facilitate your child's learning in music. As we broaden our musical horizons together you will see the major components included in each grade level below. Following this information you will find a weekly update of our progress.
Grade 6: During the first six weeks students will be introduced to band instruments and band instrument playing. Classes will begin with learning/reviewing the names of the notes in the treble and bass clefs, possible values of these notes. This is in preparation for instrument playing. Students will be involved in a variety of balanced assessments including self assessment. Students will also understand, create, and play various rhythms in 3/4, 4/4, 6/8. The latter six weeks will see the students furthering in music theory, creating melodies using boomwackers, bucket drumming, researching the relevance of the Baroque Period and its music (Bach and Handel), and learning about the instruments of the orchestra, the instruments history, sound, and note range (utilizing the keyboard as a point of reference). Learning Essentials based on the New Brunswick curriculum are presented and prioritized for each class. A variety of formative and summative assessments will be used during the last six weeks in the semester to enable students to track/measure their learning.
Grade 7: During the first six weeks students will review and play band instruments that they were introduced to in grade 6. Students will be involved with a variety of assessments which will also include self-assessment opportunities. During this time students will review the note names of the treble and bass staff. They will then use this information to read music as they play their instruments. The relationship between note reading, finger/valve/slide position/placement, and pitch recognition is the ultimate goal while the students make music in the first six weeks. The latter six weeks the students will be involved in the exploration of various music symbols, music tempo and dynamics, song composition, music listening/appreciation, the Classical music period, and the world of musicals.
Grade 8: During the first six weeks students will review and play band instruments that they played in previous years. Large, small, group and solo playing is highlighted. Students will enjoy a variety of assessments which will also include self assessment opportunities. During this time grade 8 students will review the names of the notes on the Grand Staff, note values, major and minor scales, key signatures (the circle of fifths), audio and visual intervals. Throughout the latter six weeks students will understand the relevance of the Romantic Period on society and the arts and how its affect is still prevalent today, study of the History of Rock and Roll (also with Canadian content) up to approximately 1967, compose and notate (possibly record) a song(electronic and by hand), analyse various forms of music as well completing pop song maps.
